Process Characteristics and Equipment Adaptation of PLA Biodegradable Foam Packaging under Plastic‑Restriction Policies

Plastic restriction and compost regulation policies are being implemented worldwide, limiting the application of non degradable EPS and EPE foam packaging. Bio based PLA foam has become a mainstream alternative for take away lunch boxes, e commerce cushioning pads and fresh food trays. PLA features low melt strength and a narrow processing temperature window. Direct processing on outdated general purpose extruders brings unstable foaming ratio, excessive sheet thickness deviation and brittle fracture, pushing up reject rates and overall production costs. Mature PET Foam Sheet Extrusion Line can be retrofitted with modified screws, dies and segmented temperature control systems. After commissioning, one single line can process virgin PET, recycled PET and PLA materials, removing the need for multiple dedicated sets and easing investment pressure for small and medium manufacturers.
The PLA Foam Sheet Extrusion Line imposes strict requirements on raw material pre drying, cooling setting and extrusion back pressure control. Producers can optimize full process workflows covering drying and extrusion foaming to reduce scrap generation. Foam recycling granulators can be deployed to build closed loop material circulation and offset the high raw material cost of virgin PLA.
Looking ahead, advances in bio based feedstock and foaming equipment technology will further broaden the material compatibility of the PLA Foam Sheet Extrusion Line.
