Common Production Problems & Equipment Debugging Tips for EPE Foam

EPE foam, also known as polyethylene foam, boasts outstanding shock absorption, light weight and corrosion resistance. It is widely used for protective packaging of hardware, furniture, electronic products and gifts. Many factories frequently encounter defects such as uneven foam cells, surface blisters, inconsistent hardness and uneven sheet thickness when operating EPE extruders. Most failures stem from improper raw material treatment and mismatched equipment parameters.

Excessive moisture in raw pellets is the top cause of malfunctions. Pellets absorb moisture when stored in humid environments. Once heated inside the extruder, water vaporizes and expands, forming numerous pits and blisters that ruin the appearance and cushioning performance of finished foam. Most surface defects can be avoided by fully drying raw materials and controlling drying temperature & duration before production.

Temperature of each screw zone must be strictly regulated. Overheating leads to excessive melting, lower foaming ratio and brittle hard products; insufficient temperature results in incomplete plasticization, poor molecular fusion and fragile foam prone to cracking under force. Apart from temperature, air supply pressure, screw speed and die clearance should be adjusted according to specific pellet grades instead of copying universal parameters from other manufacturers.

Long-term continuous operation causes carbonized deposits to accumulate on screws and dies. Falling residues form black spots on finished products. Regular die cleaning and periodic inspection of screw wear are required; worn spare parts shall be replaced timely to stabilize product quality.

Mass EPE scraps are generated during production, which cause heavy material waste if discarded directly. Factories can equip PS Foam Recycling Machine to reprocess scraps and defective products into pellets for reproduction, cutting waste discharge and raw material costs. However, the proportion of recycled pellets must be controlled, as excessive recycled material will degrade foam performance.
